Day 1Arrive in Beijing

Be met by your local guide at the airport/train station, and then transfer directly to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to your own arrangement.

Tip: If arriving early, you can head out and explore the city on your own to make the most of your time here. Perhaps get a taste of modern Beijing at nearby Wangfujing Street. Or you can just recover from jet-lag with a good rest at the hotel.

Day 2Beijing (B)

After breakfast, start your exploration in Beijing from the enormous Tiananmen Square, where you can get to know China’s contemporary history and shot iconic photos against the Gate of Heavenly Peace with Chairman Mao’s portrait. Walk north to the immaculately-preserved Forbidden City teeming with history and legends. You will get totally lost in its imperial intrigue while wandering the otherworldly palace of impressive halls, gardens, rare treasure and artifact collections.

In the afternoon, relax yourself in the Summer Palace with its enchanting landscape of classical gardens, pavilions, corridors, bridges, lake and small hills. The intriguing depiction of your guide will indulge you with a whole impression of the emperor’s royal life back more than thousands of years ago.

After the visit, enjoy a comfortable transfer back to your hotel.

Day 3Beijing (B)

This morning, you will depart early on a private van to the less touristy Mutianyu Great Wall (approximately 2 hours’ drive). Take the round-way cable car to best experience the panoramic vistas of this incredible engineering feat. Enjoy about 2 hours' hiking to survey the breathtaking section winding along densely wooded hills. Some steps become really steep but the spectacular views make it more than worth the while.

Head back to downtown Beijing in the afternoon, with a stopover at the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube to pose for pictures. Later, hop on an old-fashioned rickshaw to explore the crisscrossing old Hutongs, a chance to peek into the slow-paced folk life of Beijing that has endured in traditional courtyard houses for century.

Tips:

Good fitness and comfortable footwear are required for the climb.

There is also the option of taking Toboggan to slide down the wall (optional). If you prefer, please advise your travel consultant.

Day 4Beijing-Pingyao (B)

Today you will take an early morning visit to the Temple of Heaven. Breathe in the fresh air to discover the sacred roles the various buildings played in sacrificial rituals. A big bonus you do get is to catch locals enthusiastically engaging in various exercises, from Tai Chi, singing and dancing to water calligraphy - very interesting and worth a look.

Later, farewell Beijing and catch a high speed rail train to Pingyao. Take in a different view of china's countryside on the 4 hours’ train journey. After arrival, picked up at the train station and get a feel of the town’s age-old charm on the way to your hotel.

Day 5Pingyao(B)

After breakfast, leave your hotel to the Rishengchang Draft Bank, known as the forerunner of China’s modern bank. Being conserved as original style, it made a vivid depiction itself about how banking business was operated in former days. Then have a leisurely walking along the Ming and Qing Street to sample snacks, shop for souvenirs and enjoy traditional architectures in Ming and Qing dynasty style.

Continue your trip to the Tongxinggong Escort Agency, where you can get an eye-opening insight into the armed escort service in ancient Chinese dynasties, and the Pingyao County Governmentwith a history of over 600 years. If lucky enough, you may catch the re-enactment of an old Court Trial.

Finally climb up the Ancient City Wall dating from 1370 and get fabulous views of the time-warped town cloaked in peace before dark.

Good to Know: The town is more intriguing at night when antique style buildings are lit up by red lanterns. Go out for a walk to soak up the night scene, or ask your guide for some suggestions of optional night activities.

Day 6Pingyao - Xian (B)

Take one-hour drive to Wang Family Mansion, a grandiose Qing-dynasty residential compound which went through half a century to complete. Follow your guide through seemingly endless courtyards to marvel at elaborate architectural details and its unique structure design embodying Chinese patriarchal etiquettes. Ascend up the very top of the wall where you can truly get the grand scales of the complex.

Proceed to the 1400-year-old Shuanglin Temple. Surrounded by the smoke and smell of incense, explore the exquisite collection of more than 2000 colored sculptures and admire glorious wall paintings that vividly depict how Sakyamuni achieved full enlightenment.

Next, transfer to the railway station at Pingyao for your train trip to Xian (approximately 2 hours). After being met by your guide and driven to your hotel, have a nice rest for next day’s activities.

Day 7Xian (B)

Today visit Xian’s most famous site, the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Be stunned by the life-size clay statues of soldiers, horses and chariots standing in battle formation and guarding over their emperor for over 2000 years. Along your explore of the three pits, the life story of Emperor Qin Shi Huang and the secret of China’s amazing craftsmanship will be unveiled.

Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to explore the ancient Xian City Wall, the most complete city fortification extending 13.7km around the city. Climb up the flight of high stone steps and walk stop to feel the imposing grandeur of battlements, towers and ramparts, absorbing the sweeping views of both ancient and modern Xian.

Move onto the Great Mosque to enjoy an unusual blend of Chinese and Islamic architectures. Soak up the tranquility of the place serving Xian’s Muslim community for more than a millennium. Outside the mosque is the bustling Muslim Street, enchanting you with a cluster of fine eateries, souvenir stands and lively markets. Also drop by the Bell Tower & Drum Tower Square for some photo opportunities.

Day 8Xian-Shanghai (B)

This morning, head to downtown to peruse impressive exhibitions of art and antiquities at the Xian Museum and gain deeper insights into Xian’s history and culture. Continue to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda setting in a tranquil garden inside the museum and immortalize the graceful silhouette of the Tang-dynasty pagoda with your camera.

Later, you will be transferred to Xian airport to take your flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival in Shanghai you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

Day 9Shanghai (B)

Pick you up from your hotel, head to Shanghai Museum where the excellent collections of Chinese Bronze, ceramic and calligraphy will escort you through the glorious pages of Chinese history. Roam along The Bund to witness gorgeous art deco style buildings contracting with Pudong’s futuristic skyline. Continue experiencing the old Shanghai atmosphere on Nanjing Road, a renowned pedestrianized shopping street.

Afternoon visit is Shanghai’s premier sight - Yuyuan Garden, taking you back in time to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) with its ancient style architectures, fantastic rockeries and decorative corridors. Don’s miss the nearby Chenghuang Miao Bazaars, lined with teahouses and curio shop for bargain shopping. Then explore the old lanes of the New Spot (Xintiandi) to find flavour of Shanghai yesteryear among traditional Shikumen buildings, which now house fashionable boutiques, galleries and cafes.

Night Options: Enjoy a boat cruise on the Huangpu River to take in Shanghai’s glamorous skyline or watch a heart-griping Shanghai Acrobatics Show.

Note: Shanghai Museum is closed to public on Mondays, then Shanghai History Museum will be arranged on the day instead.

Day 10Depart from Shanghai (B)

Your tour ends with a private transfer to the railway station/airport for your departing train/flight.

NOTE: Nearby water towns are nice for you to enjoy a break from modern Shanghai and appreciate their peace and beauty. Extending one or two days will be enough for the water town tour. If interested and time permits, please ask your travel consultant for details and costs.
