Modern by Tibetan standards, Yutuo Road was first constructed in 1964 when it became the very first asphalt road in Lhasa and home to a number of other significant firsts. The first department store, hair salon, restaurant, hardware store, and grocery store were established on Yutuo Road back in the day. More recently after a four-month reconstruction in March 2002, it is now the busiest pedestrian shopping precinct in the city. Lhasa Department Store is located at the west end, while the east end of the street is connected to Barkhor Circuit and Jokhang Temple Square. Shop for Tibetan incense, handcrafted rugs, Tibetan medicine, souvenirs, Tibetan jewelry and ornaments from the many shops now calling Yutuo Road home. Trusted by locals for the quality of goods in the precinct, international travelers can feel safe shopping here too.
