Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Shanghai

Arrive in Shanghai, the Pearl of the Orient, and be welcomed enthusiastically by your local Shanghai guide. Keen to help you relax and feel comfortable, your guide and driver will escort you to your hotel sharing a little of this exciting city’s highlights, history, and culture. With free time available to explore, you can make the most of the remainder of the day, visiting local sights and partaking in some delicious local culinary specialties.

Meals included: None

Day 2 - Shanghai

Shanghai is truly an international city and you’ll understand why when you start your day by visiting the Shanghai Museum home to over 140,000 artifacts. Explore on your own or listen to your guide share the fascinating history and culture of this cosmopolitan city. Few places capture the intersection of commerce and culture in Shanghai like The Bund. Famous for its location in proximity to the trading centre of Shanghai, the Bund is an outstanding example of old Shanghai glamour and commerce. While shopping may not be front of mind, a walk through the busiest shopping precinct in China, Nanjing Road, will open your eyes to the way modern China shops. Big high street fashion stores sit alongside quirky silk traders and shops selling every imaginable thing. Gain an insight to the life and prestige of local merchants from times past when you visit Yuyuan Garden. The beautifully designed buildings and stunning gardens are a welcome reprieve from Shanghai’s big city bustle. You’ll find plenty to capture in beautiful photographic travel memories. Stroll around the nearby Yu Garden Bazaar that offers an eclectic cross-section of goods, from souvenirs, antiques, crafts, fresh produce, and food. Make the most of your afternoon by wandering the quieter streets of Dongping Road or Sinan Road in the Former French Concession, where you will find the essence of classic Shanghai captured in this historical retail and residential precinct.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: As the Shanghai Museum is closed to public on Mondays, a visit to the Shanghai History Museum is arranged as an alternative.

Looking for iconic Shanghai mementos to remember your travel adventure? Talk to your local guide. With personal knowledge of the best locations to find silk, porcelain, and other Shanghai treasures, your local guide can save you time, ensure your purchase is authentic, and guarantee you take home a beautiful travel treasure.

Day 3 – Shanghai – Huangshan City

Prepare yourself for a step back in time as today’s exploration takes you to the ancient water town that is located closest to Shanghai. After breakfast, you’ll be collected from the hotel by your local guide and driver and transported in airconditioned comfort to Zhujiajiao Water Town with its 1,700 year history. While there will be an opportunity to wander, you’ll also have the chance to meander through the ancient village in a row boat if you choose (optional activity). A stark contrast to the contemporary highrises of central Shanghai, Zhujiajiao Water Town offers an insight to what life was once like. Following the tour, you will be transferred to the local train station for a highspeed train trip to Huangshan.

The local guide in Huangshan will greet you and commence your exploration here with a visit to Tunxi Old Street, which is actually a number of streets and alleyways. Tunxi Old Street offers a glimpse into the ways traditional Chinese commerce and life has merged with a more contemporary spin on things. You will have ample time to wander through and explore the eclectic mix of local crafts, cuisine, and tea. Once you’ve satisfied your inner creative, it’s time to head to the hotel, where your guide will assist you with check in. If you’re planning on heading out for dinner, be sure to ask for local insider tips for the best possible dining experience.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 – Mount Huangshan

Fortify yourself with a hearty breakfast because today’s adventure will take you to new heights. Your guide will collect you from the hotel and together you’ll take the one hour drive to Mount Huangshan, one of the most significant peaks in China. On arrival, you’ll be transferred to a shuttle bus and ride the Yungu Cable Car for the ten minute journey up the mountain. Once you reach the peak, you’ll realize how worthwhile the trip has been. From this eagle-eye perspective you’ll be able to take in other peaks within view, including the towering Begin-to-Believe Peak, majestic Lion Peak, and Writing-Brush Peak. Expect to be amazed by the plentiful photo opportunities while hiking.

Rest and restore your energy during the buffet lunch, before continuing your adventure to the West Sea Grand Canyon. This is a hiker’s fairyland for the miraculous scenery with its steep precipices, peculiarly-shaped rocks, ancient pine trees, and sea of clouds. The 4.5 kilometer trail penetrates deep into the ravine and can be a difficult trek. It’s your choice whether to follow the winding path down to the bottom or only walk a small section of it. Options available include finishing to just the First Ring or Second Ring. At the end of the hike, enjoy the buffet dinner and overnight stay at the pre-booked hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast, Buffet Lunch and Dinner

Notes:

Please be aware, you will have an overnight stay on the mountain as part of today’s itinerary arrangements. It is recommended to travel light by taking just some carry-on items when hiking, including a waterproof jacket. Your guide will help you with storage of heavy luggage. In addition, for environmental protection hotels, on the mountain will not provide disposable toiletries, so please carry your own.

Day 5 – Mount Huangshan – Hongcun Village – Shanghai

Make the most of the pristine environment found at the top of Mount Huangshan, and rise early. If weather permits, start your day by relishing the stunning sunrise on the top of Mount Huangshan. Later, descend by cable car for the drive to Hongcun Village, considered by locals to be an iconic village from a Chinese painting. Here you can wander along flagstone lanes, view the well preserved residences from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and soak up picturesque rural scenery featured in the internationally acclaimed film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Following the exploration of Hongcun Village, you will be transferred to the railway station for the return trip to Shanghai via high speed train. On arrival, you will be met and taken to your hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast

Tripadvisor score Wonderful Experience in Xi’an with Eric and China Tours

July 2026

China Tours is a great tour company and you can relax in China as they pick you up from the airport, lead you to the your hotel, and arrange your tours with an experienced guide and driver. If you visit Xi-an and get tour guide, Eric, you got lucky! Eric is extremely smart, diligent, and prepared as a tour guide. He speaks English well and also has a great sense of humor. Your whole family will enjoy his company. We had a great time seeing the Terracotta Warriors, attending the live show, riding bikes on the City Wall as well as visiting the Muslim District. I have to say Xi'an is very hot and humid in July but Eric has a positive attitude and works with you to make the trip pleasurable. He also has a magic Mary Poppins-type backpack where he is able to pull out things you need i.e. umbrella, tissues, his 1st grade homework, etc. I would say he was one of the best tour guides we have had!

Tripadvisor score Excellent Personal Tours of the Beijing and Xi’an regions

August 2026

We had two different guide/driver teams during our trip to China, one in Beijing from August 3–6 and another in Xi’an from August 6–8, and both were excellent.

In Beijing, our guide was Cynthia 常. She picked us up at the airport and was always on time, as was our driver. The driver had a newer Chinese electric sedan, which was very comfortable, and he was friendly and drove very well.

Cynthia was very helpful throughout the three days. She took us to all the main places we wanted to see, but she was also very flexible when we decided to change things around at the last minute. We never felt like we were being rushed through a fixed itinerary. She was also happy to help when we wanted to find local food rather than just eat at the usual tourist restaurants.

Cynthia and the driver also took us to the train station when we left Beijing, and when we arrived in Xi’an, Eric and our new driver were already there waiting for us. They were just as punctual and professional.

Eric had prepared some small trinkets for us to receive at some of the historical sites around Xi’an and Lintong. It was a small thing, but it was a nice and thoughtful touch.

We were particularly interested in trying local food, and both teams were very helpful with this. We had some great meals because of their recommendations. The river trout near the Great Wall was a particular favorite in Beijing, and of course the biang-biang noodles in Xi’an were a must.

We really appreciated having guides who were willing to listen to what we actually wanted to do instead of simply following a standard schedule. Both Cynthia and Eric were friendly, helpful and easy to travel with, and both drivers made us feel comfortable getting around.

I would definitely recommend Cynthia and Eric to other visitors, and I hope we get the chance to use them again if we return to China.

Tripadvisor score Our first time to China

July 2026

We have had a phenomenal trip with China Tours. We flew into Shanghai and we were met by Lucy at Customs. Three nights gave us plenty of time to see the sites in Shanghai, Suzhou and Tongli, the museum, a few gardens, park, French section, the Bund and the old section. The Hotel was gorgeous! Next we flew to Xi’an where we were met by Eric and our driver. Both Eric and Lucy are fluent in English. Both are incredible knowledgeable about their perspective cities. With Eric we visited the Terracotta Soldiers, and Goose Pagoda. I left my phone in the restroom of the Pagoda. I realized my phone was missing about 30 minutes and 35 miles later. Eric went the extra mile, my phone was found intact and after a special detour it was returned to me. If coming to Xi’an I recommend Eric as your guide. There is so much to see and do here! A natural hot springs, mountain trails, museums, the City wall!
I am very impresssed with how smooth our trip has been and how personalized it is. From the accommodations, the drivers, guides, tours, in country flights I am incredibly pleased with Chinatours and I recommend them highly.

Tripadvisor score Xi’an Must Do Experience

July 2026

Xi’an was an unexpected delight! So much to see and do. In a couple days we were able to visit the City Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Muslim quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda. On our guide Eric’s recommendation we even saw an incredible live show with live camels and wolves and all kinds of special effects. Eric made the tour particularly special with his great attitude, videos to explain history, and sense of humour. Eric took exceptional care of us. We joked his backpack was magical as he always seemed to have anything one would want - an umbrella, extra fan, snack, or even a prop to demonstrate an ancient amusement. He was respectful and interested in our culture. He will leave enormous shoes to fill for our remaining guides!
