Highlights

Zhangjiajie
Fenghuang

Take a welcome break from the ancient built wonders and busyness of China to enjoy spectacular natural scenery. Be thrilled by precipitous peaks and challenging structures that take you up close and personal with natural wonders and travel through a gallery of post-card scenic beauty.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Zhangjiajie

Upon arrival in Zhangjiajie, your guide and driver will greet you and transfer you to the pre-booked hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to enjoy.

Meals included: None

Day 2 - Zhangjiajie

After breakfast at the hotel, the day's sightseeing begins with a visit to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which has a variety of scenic areas featuring unique sandstone landforms. Upon arrival, a shuttle bus will take you to the Bailong Elevator, the highest and fastest glass elevator in the world built into a cliff face, for ascension to Yuanjiajie Scenic Area. Here you will enjoy the splendid views of the ‘garden in heaven’ as you become immersed in the misty fairyland full of sky-kissing ancient trees, mossy stones and peculiar rocks.

Board another shuttle bus to the precipitous Tianzi Mountain for a panoramic view of the peculiarly shaped granite peaks and valleys. Many restaurants and snack stalls are available from which to arrange your own lunch.

Descend from the mountain by cable car to catch a shuttle bus to the captivating Ten-mile Natural Gallery. From a small train, marvel at the misty karst landscape, thick woods and grotesque rocks, dotted with villages and farms as the train meanders along the valley floor. At the end of the day you will be returned to the hotel.

Note: To save your time and avoid long queues, your guide may alter the attraction sequence.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 - Zhangjiajie

Following the breakfast, a 30 minute drive will take you to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, a landform museum combining mountains, valleys, streams, cliffs and forests, where you can take in the vista from the transparent Glass Bridge hanging between canyon cliffs, 300 meters above the valley floor. Descend to the bottom of the Canyon through the One Line Sky, a narrow, steep path surrounded by cliffs until vision of the sky becomes merely a line. Follow the flow of the river walking to Shenquan Lake where you may have a chance to take a boat to appreciate the magical scenery above from the water below.

Note: The Glass Bridge is not recommended for people who fear heights.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 - Tianmenshan – Fenghuang Ancient Town

After breakfast, the day’s tour leaves for the precipitous Tianmen Mountain. Be prepared for an intense, breathtaking experience taking the world’s longest cable car to the mountain top and walking the glass Sky Walk 1430 meters above the ground. An escalator built through the mountain leads to Tianmen Cave, a naturally formed hole in the mountain. It is an ideal place to take photos of the stunning natural landscape and the 999 steps leading to the foot of the cave. An escalator will take you down the mountain to catch the shuttle bus for the thrill of travelling the 99 bends while the bus winds downhill to the parking lot. You will then be transferred to Fenghuang Ancient Town and checked in at the pre-booked hotel to prepare for next day’s travel.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 - Fenghuang Ancient Town – Depart Zhangjiajie

Today you will be exposed to Fenghuang’s ethnic customs and culture, which begins with a visit to the former residence of Shen Congwen. You will be able to climb up the Tower of East Gate, drop by the Yang Ancestral Memorial, the Ancient Town Museum and many other interesting sites. Fenghuang Ancient Town, home to the Miao minority people, is renowned for the lines of traditional stilt houses tightly packed along the river. Feel free to roam around the town to appreciate the elegance of the Miao style architecture, or take a boat ride down the Tuojiang River to become immersed in the serene riverside scenery. Rambling the ancient lanes you will be able to absorb intricate details of the folk houses and get a feel for the primitive simplicity of local life or take the opportunity to pick up handmade items in local shops.

On return to Zhangjiajie you will be transferred to the airport or the train station for your next destination. Your wonderful Zhangjiajie tour concludes.

Tripadvisor score Personalized tour, anchored in family history

May 2026 • Solo

Mine was an unusual trip, aimed at visiting sites from the mother's life in China, more than 100 years ago. Th China Tours guides and drivers made it possible for me to see every one of places I had identified. IN many cases they did additional background research, finding historical photographs, and identifying locations. All tour logistics (rail, lodging) worked smoothly. I am more than 100% satisfied!

Tripadvisor score Excellent trip

May 2026 • Couples

We had an excellent experience with this tour company from start to finish. Communication during planning was smooth and responsive, pricing was very reasonable, and every guide we had was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Lee in Beijing was the best! The itinerary was thoughtfully planned to avoid crowds and make travel days comfortable and efficient. Hotel selections throughout the trip exceeded our expectations in both comfort and location. Overall, this was a very well-organized and enjoyable experience, and we would highly recommend this company to anyone traveling in China.

Tripadvisor score AMAZING holiday in Yunnan Province

May 2026 • Couples

This is our second China trip with China Tours. Thank you for organising such a fantastic trip Martha! Five stars experience in every way. We chose China Tours again for our trip to Yunnan, after we had a fabulous time in Beijing last year. It’s a 10-day tour which started in Kunming, and then we went to Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-la. From the moment we were picked up at Kunming airport, getting local sim card, dropped off at the hotel and the places we visited, everything was smooth and we were really taken care of.
The hotels were all excellent with great services and extensive options of breakfast included. The drivers were excellent, especially Mrs. Li who drove us from Dali to Lijiang and to Shangri-la, the car was very comfortable and spacious. We had different guides in every city, they are all very friendly, helpful, and they have deep knowledge of all the places we visited. Especially our guide Caroline from Lijiang and Tsesham from Shangri-la. We spent more time in Lijiang and Shangri-la so we had more time with our guides there. They are truly the experts of their respective cultures, they are attentive, insightful, very kind, and encouraging. We had so much fun! Thank you for making our holiday in China feel special and memorable.

Cannot say enough about this tour. Booking was incredible easy, communication, fantastic we had the great guides, including Lee in Beijing, Helen in Xi’an, Tracy in Chengdu, and John in Shanghai. Everyone was ineligible and brought you perspective. Everything was arranged perfectly, including in country, airfare and high-speed rail we elected five star hotels, and we were not disappointed. Tripadvisor score Amazingly organised tours with incredible people

Apr 2026 • Couples

Booked back to back tours through China to visit the must see places people always talk about. First tour for 10 days covered Beijing (included Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Mutianyu Great Wall), Xian (Terracotta Army), Zhangjajie (visit the national forest via Bailong Elevator and Tianmen Mountain) and ended in Shanghai (The Bund and Yuyuan Garden). Next tour commenced a couple of days later visiting Chengdu (can't miss the Pandas) and Lhasa in Tibet (including Drepung and Sera Monasteries and Potala Palace). Guides are all fantastic. Thank you Jessica, Chris, Cindy, Lucy, Raymond and Tashi for making it such a memorable trip. So much more to see and will have to have another visit. Some hiccups with flights (delayed departures, cancellations due to bad weather) but through it all Lora was there to help find emergency accommodation and re-book flights (and thank you to Lucy and Tashi who had to deal with 2:00am flights and returns to airports when flight couldn't land). If our experience with China Tours is indicative of the service they provide then I have nothing but admiration for the organisation.
