Hangzhou
Mount Huangshan

A different view of Hangzhou and Mount Huangshan awaits on this easygoing five day fully guided tour. Kick off the adventure in Hangzhou, visiting local icons, including West Lake, Lingyin Temple at Feilai Peak, and an operating tea plantation where you can experience the rich culture and tradition of Chinese tea. Discover more about ancient crafts practised in China at the Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion and perhaps even turn your hand to one as well. Depart Hangzhou and travel by high speed train to Huangshan. Beautiful mountain top scenery awaits here as you ride by cable car and then hike to different points across the peak of Mount Huangshan. Appreciate exactly why the internationally acclaimed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon film was made here. Providing the chance to truly savor some of China’s most beautiful treasures, you’ll find the English speaking guides, careful attention to detail, and opportunity to explore within a relaxed timetable, the perfect way to enjoy real China. Ready to book? Let’s help you explore more.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Hangzhou

Upon arrival in Hangzhou, your professional guide will greet you and escort you to the pre-booked hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to explore this incredible city.

Meals included: None

Note: Make the most of your tour by enjoying some of the wonderful Hangzhou evening entertainment. Options include the Enduring Memories of Hangzhou show (West Lake Impression) or the spectacular night view at Qiantang River on weekends.

Note: Our guide will contact you in advance to confirm the pickup time.

Day 2 – Hangzhou

After breakfast, you’ll be collected from the hotel to commence today’s exploration. First stop is the Hangzhou’s famous landmark, West Lake. There will be a stop here to observe Red Carp Pond, one of top ten famous views of the West Lake. So named for the thousands of red carp that inhabit the waters there, Red Carp Pond is a definite photo opportunity.

West Lake is ideal for a leisurely boat cruise that affords a different perspective of the serenity provided by the natural scenery, historic pagodas, and stunning pavilions. Scenes that conjure up images portrayed by scholars and philosophers are inspired by spots along the way: the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and Su Causeway.

From West Lake, enjoy a relaxed drive to Feilai Peak. Wonder at the persistence of many who’ve created the hundreds of ancient Buddhist rock carvings over various different time periods. A visit to Lingyin Temple will impress. As one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China, it is impressive in size and design. Marvel at ornately painted halls and ceilings in the smell of incense. Your guide will share the compelling historical legends behind the temple.

The final stop on today’s adventure offers picturesque views of an operating tea plantation surrounded by verdant tea fields. Get a close look at how tea grows on the rolling terraces and even pick some leaves if your visit coincides with the harvest season. Learn about how integral tea is to Chinese culture and custom at the China National Tea Museum where collections of tea varieties, tea sets and machines for making tea can be found.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: While no evening meal is included in today’s itinerary, consult with your guide who can provide advice about suitable dining options, including local restaurants offering authentic local cuisine.

Day 3 – Hangzhou – Huangshan city

Today’s morning allows you to immerse yourself in Hangzhou culture. Get ready to be amazed by 20 kinds of traditional Chinese crafts at the Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion. Watch skilled craftsmen at work or join in to paint your own oil-paper umbrella or make a flying kite*. Step outside to board a boat for a cruise down the Grand Canal, passing ancient residences, bridges and red lanterns creating an enduring travel memory of your visit here.

Later, wander the lanes of Dadou Road Historic Block, a visitor-friendly area packed full of quaint shops built in traditional in Ming and Qing dynasty styles, selling various crafts and local snacks. From Hangzhou, you will board the highspeed train to Huangshan.

On arrival in Huangshan, there is time to roam Tunxi Old Street with the local guide. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, sample delicacies or tea, investigate the local crafts, or perhaps even have a calligraphy memento prepared to order.

Meals included: Breakfast

*Optional activities incur an additional cost.

Day 4 – Mount Huangshan

Wake early enough to enjoy breakfast before driving with your guide for an hour to Mount Huangshan, one of the most iconically beautiful mountains in China. Think eerie mist covered mountains covered with willows. Certainly the stuff of poems and film sets. Board a shuttle bus and then ride the Yungu Cable Car up to the mountain. Follow your guide to explore major viewing sites like the towering Begin-to-Believe Peak, the majestic Lion Peak, and the Writing-Brush Peak for splendid sightseeing and photo opportunities while hiking.

Enjoy the buffet lunch and then continue your adventure to the West Sea Grand Canyon, a hiker’s dream. With its miraculous scenery of steep precipices, peculiarly-shaped rocks, ancient pine trees, and sea of clouds, your exploration will be rewarded with the stunning vistas. The 4.5 km trail penetrates deep into the ravine and can be a difficult trek. You’re free to choose whether to follow the winding path down to the bottom, or only walk a small section of it, for example to finish the First Ring or Second Ring. At the end of the hike, enjoy the buffet dinner and overnight stay at the pre-booked hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast, Buffet Lunch & Dinner

Note: As part of today’s itinerary, there is an overnight stay on the mountain. For this reason, it is recommended you travel light by carrying only essential items when hiking, including a jacket. Your guide will assist with storage of heavy luggage during the hike. In addition, for environmental protection hotels on the mountain will not provide disposable toiletries, so it is necessary for you to bring your own.

Day 5 – Mount Huangshan – Hongcun Village and Departure

If weather permits, rise early and start your day with the stunning sunrise on the top of Mount Huangshan. Later, descend by cable car for the drive to Hongcun Village, deemed by locals to be as pretty as “a village in Chinese painting". Discover why as you wander along flagstone lanes, see well preserved residences from Ming and Qing Dynasties and soak up picturesque rural scenery featured in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

Following this exploration, you will be transferred to the airport or railway station for your next destination. The tour concludes today.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: If you would like to make beautiful travel memories anywhere else in China, please let us know. Our expert travel consultants can assist with travel bookings and arrangements, including the purchase of train tickets and other tours from or around Huangshan. We can customize every detail, so there’s no need to worry about a thing. Just ask us.

Tripadvisor score Excellent Tour and Outstanding Guides

August 2026 . Friends

We had a very good experience and would definitely recommend this tour. The itinerary was well paced, covered the major sights we wanted to see, and the logistics were handled very well.

The guides were the strongest part of the trip. Helen was exceptional; Robert, John and Smile were all knowledgeable, attentive and flexible. They worked hard to make the trip comfortable and adjusted when needed. Smile’s recommendation of the Beijing acrobat show was an unexpected highlight.

We loved the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Terracotta Warriors, pandas and Shanghai Museum. The Peking duck experience was also excellent. Crowds were overwhelming at times, but that was beyond the tour company’s control.

There were a few areas for improvement; dietary restrictions needed better communication with restaurants, domestic airline baggage limits should be explained in advance, and we would have appreciated clearer instructions for high-speed train travel.

Overall, it was a memorable trip with excellent guides, good pacing and very well-managed logistics. We were very glad we chose this tour.

Tripadvisor score Wonderful Experience in Xi’an with Eric and China Tours

July 2026

China Tours is a great tour company and you can relax in China as they pick you up from the airport, lead you to the your hotel, and arrange your tours with an experienced guide and driver. If you visit Xi-an and get tour guide, Eric, you got lucky! Eric is extremely smart, diligent, and prepared as a tour guide. He speaks English well and also has a great sense of humor. Your whole family will enjoy his company. We had a great time seeing the Terracotta Warriors, attending the live show, riding bikes on the City Wall as well as visiting the Muslim District. I have to say Xi'an is very hot and humid in July but Eric has a positive attitude and works with you to make the trip pleasurable. He also has a magic Mary Poppins-type backpack where he is able to pull out things you need i.e. umbrella, tissues, his 1st grade homework, etc. I would say he was one of the best tour guides we have had!

Tripadvisor score Excellent Personal Tours of the Beijing and Xi’an regions

August 2026

We had two different guide/driver teams during our trip to China, one in Beijing from August 3–6 and another in Xi’an from August 6–8, and both were excellent.

In Beijing, our guide was Cynthia 常. She picked us up at the airport and was always on time, as was our driver. The driver had a newer Chinese electric sedan, which was very comfortable, and he was friendly and drove very well.

Cynthia was very helpful throughout the three days. She took us to all the main places we wanted to see, but she was also very flexible when we decided to change things around at the last minute. We never felt like we were being rushed through a fixed itinerary. She was also happy to help when we wanted to find local food rather than just eat at the usual tourist restaurants.

Cynthia and the driver also took us to the train station when we left Beijing, and when we arrived in Xi’an, Eric and our new driver were already there waiting for us. They were just as punctual and professional.

Eric had prepared some small trinkets for us to receive at some of the historical sites around Xi’an and Lintong. It was a small thing, but it was a nice and thoughtful touch.

We were particularly interested in trying local food, and both teams were very helpful with this. We had some great meals because of their recommendations. The river trout near the Great Wall was a particular favorite in Beijing, and of course the biang-biang noodles in Xi’an were a must.

We really appreciated having guides who were willing to listen to what we actually wanted to do instead of simply following a standard schedule. Both Cynthia and Eric were friendly, helpful and easy to travel with, and both drivers made us feel comfortable getting around.

I would definitely recommend Cynthia and Eric to other visitors, and I hope we get the chance to use them again if we return to China.

Tripadvisor score Our first time to China

July 2026

We have had a phenomenal trip with China Tours. We flew into Shanghai and we were met by Lucy at Customs. Three nights gave us plenty of time to see the sites in Shanghai, Suzhou and Tongli, the museum, a few gardens, park, French section, the Bund and the old section. The Hotel was gorgeous! Next we flew to Xi’an where we were met by Eric and our driver. Both Eric and Lucy are fluent in English. Both are incredible knowledgeable about their perspective cities. With Eric we visited the Terracotta Soldiers, and Goose Pagoda. I left my phone in the restroom of the Pagoda. I realized my phone was missing about 30 minutes and 35 miles later. Eric went the extra mile, my phone was found intact and after a special detour it was returned to me. If coming to Xi’an I recommend Eric as your guide. There is so much to see and do here! A natural hot springs, mountain trails, museums, the City wall!
I am very impresssed with how smooth our trip has been and how personalized it is. From the accommodations, the drivers, guides, tours, in country flights I am incredibly pleased with Chinatours and I recommend them highly.
