Highlights

Hangzhou
Suzhou

There is much to enjoy in this tour of immersion into ancient Chinese culture, architecture, craft and gardens, when you can try your hand at traditional skills. Whether picking tea, making an umbrella or kite, wondering at the skill of monks’ carvings, being enchanted by the picture post-card beauty of the lake or ancient buildings, there are so many memorable experiences waiting for you.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Hangzhou

Upon arrival in Hangzhou (before 13:00 is recommended) you will be picked up by your travel guide and transferred to the old block of Hangzhou to begin exploration of the city’s colorful folk culture. The tour begins at the Workmanship Demonstration Pavilion, a craft center where you can experience making such things as a kite or an oiled paper umbrella, while learning about folk art and culture of Hangzhou (optional*).

Outside the pavilion you will board a cruise to travel across the longest and oldest Grand Canal in the world, travelling past traditional Chinese residences, gardens and arched bridges, to arrive at the Dadou Road Historic Block. Stroll the cobbled streets in this revitalized residential area to discover fine examples of architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Peek into the past in the majestic Xiangji Temple, stop off at the museums and displays of traditional crafts, or indulge yourself at the cafes, restaurants and gift shops.

You will be transferred to the pre-booked hotel for check-in at the end of the day.

Meals included: None
*Optional activities incur additional charges.

Tips: Make the most of your tour by enjoying some of the wonderful Hangzhou evening entertainment. Options include the Enduring Memories of Hangzhou show (West Lake Impression) or the spectacular night view at Qiantang River on weekends.

Day 2 - Hangzhou

After breakfast, take a relaxing cruise on West Lake. Board an ornate boat, from which you can appreciate fully the beauty of this man-made lake, designed for poetic serenity in the tradition of Chinese gardens, which forms the scene printed on the one yuan banknote. Magical views of hills, willows, bridges and well-placed structures, invite photographic and artistic endeavor, especially at sunrise or sunset. Cycling around this symbol of Hangzhou is another way to capture its beauty (at your own cost).

A short drive away is the most sacred Buddhist center in southern China, Lingyin Temple, with its 500 bronze seated statues of Arhats in the grand hall. You will be amazed by the massive number and scale of Buddha statues carved in Feilai Peak and the exquisite carvings on the approach to the Temple. History and legends of the sites will be revealed by your guide along the way.

At a visit to a tea plantation, the whole cultural cycle of tea production will be revealed, as you get a close look at how tea grows on the rolling terraces and even pick some leaves, if your visit coincides with the harvest season. Further understanding of Chinese tea history and culture can be gained at the China National Tea Museum that holds collections of tea varieties, tea sets and machines for making tea. You will then be returned to the hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast

Tips: For those who don’t like boating, biking is an alternative way to explore the beauty of the West Lake. Your tour guide will suggest an itinerary from which you can choose (at your own expense).

Day 3 - Hangzhou – Suzhou

After breakfast, you will be transferred to catch the high-speed train to Suzhou. On arrival in this beautiful garden city, you will be met by your local guide and start your tour. First stop is Tiger Hill, a large hill park steeped in history and incredibly beautiful scenery. A particular feature is the leaning Tiger Hill Pagoda. The Master of the Nets Garden is a dainty, classical garden of exquisitely laid out pavilions, rockeries, corridors, bridges and ponds, all in breathtaking harmony. Another wondrous sight is the Humble Administrator’s Garden, a masterpiece of landscape planning around waters and pavilions, truly representative of a Chinese garden.

You will then be driven to the pre-booked Suzhou hotel.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 - Tongli Water Town - Suzhou and Departure

A short 30 minute drive from Suzhou will take you to Tongli Water Town, which has been conserved basically unchanged for more than a thousand years. The town comprises a sprawling network of rivers and bridges and narrow streets carrying specialty stores, handcrafts and snacks, each street different. Roam the streets to take delight in the residences with gardens and public buildings, all favoring Song dynasty architecture. Bridges in Tongli are interesting for their architecture as much as the legends about them, making enduring memories and photos.

The tour concludes when you are transferred to Suzhou for the departure flight or train to your next destination.

Meals included: Breakfast

Tips: Transfer to Shanghai airport is available for an extra charge. Please contact your travel consultant for details.

Tripadvisor score Once in a life time. Don’t miss it!

Oct 2025 • Friends

We love China Tours, and glad we chose them.

So far, we’re having a wonderful experience with our tour guide, Helena, in Hong Kong. She is incredibly knowledgeable, speaks excellent English, and shared so much fascinating information about every place we visited. She took us to many interesting and beautiful locations that we might never have discovered on our own. Throughout the day, she was patient, kind, and always ready to help with anything we needed. Her professionalism and friendly personality made the tour both enjoyable and memorable. We are very grateful for her guidance and would highly recommend her to anyone visiting Hong Kong, and we can’t wait to visit China too!

Tripadvisor score An unforgettable experience in Xi’an!

Oct 2025 • Couples

This is the fourth time I write this review because tripadvisor keeps saying it was made using AI. As a non-native English speaker, I used AI to give Cathy the highest praise I could for taking care of us during our trip to Xi'an. She's the best and takes care of every single detail. To Cathy my biggest thanks and to tripadvisor and its insipid AI I hope you detect a drop in content creation due to this.

Tripadvisor score White Glove Treatment

Sept 2025 • Solo

I was a little nervous- never been to Asia, never used this company etc but WOW. I was completely blown away by the service. I booked the two week tour that included Beijing- Xi-an Yangtze cruise- Zhangjiajie and Shanghai. The hotels were fabulous. The transportation included two high speed trains, plane, and private driving service. The guides were top notch and stayed with us until we were on the train and another met us at the other end when we stepped off. Our group was small so we were mobile and able to navigate easily. There wasn’t any shopping stops.

Tripadvisor score Great time in China

Sept 2025 • Solo

I traveled through China with China Tours from Sep. 11th to 25th and had a great time. I visited Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, Yangtze river cruise, Zhangjiajie and Shanghai. Everything went smoothly and the tour guides are really helpful and professional. It would be fair to mention their names, just to give them their due: Lee in Beijing, Helen in Xian, Winnie in Chongqing, Lucy in Zhangjiajie and John and Cici in Shanghai. There are many highlights in a country like China, but from a foreigner's point of view maybe Chongqing stands out clearly, if only for unusual, and touring with Winnie, with her deep knowledge of the city made for a great experience.

I had a fantastic trip in China. I was met by 4 different guides in China in each city. In Beijing, I was met by Lindsey , in Xian By Linda, Warren in Shangai and Mathew in Hong kong. They were all very professional and I enjoyed the stories. You have a beautiful country and a lot of history I will definitely recommend China Tours. I met some wonderful people too. The highlight of the tour was surprising my son Jason in Hong Kong as he was celebrating his 30th 🥰

Tripadvisor score The best tour I have ever had

Sept 2025 • Solo

Usually I only write negative reviews, but this time it is an exception. Unfortunately I can give only 5 stars, but the company deserves 100 stars. Everything was exceptional, from organizing starting with some places I had in mind to visit, to every single detail of the trip. In other words it was perfect. I chose what I wanted to visit and Martha, the person who replied to my first inquiry, proposed the tour. I wanted to be alone in the tour, which is the best (only you and the guide), but maybe due to the requests, in two places I was with another couple from USA, which was really great. While on tour I realized that there are places I want to visit, but there was no time for this. This means next year I have to come back, but this time I will be alone. There are some things when you have to be alone, no matter how nice the other group members are. Of course if I will come back, I will use China Tours.
