Suzhou

City of gardens. Venice of the East. Stunning Suzhou. The home of wellness. Words simply won’t suffice when it comes to describing this seeming anomaly among China’s big, bustling cities. Start your four day sojourn in Suzhou by sampling a number of the gardens for which the city is famous – Tiger Hill with its leaning pagoda and Lingering Garden among them. Absorb the history and tradition from the Tang and Song dynasties evident around Pingjiang Road and step back in time as you wander through the canals and alleys of Tongli Water Town. Renowned for its well preserved old buildings, private gardens, temples and traditional dwellings, Tongli will delight. Suzhou Museum visit, rickshaw ride, and the chance to book evening activities, this tour is inclusive of four or five star hotel accommodation, all transfers, a wonderful local English speaking guide who will bring Suzhou to life, and daily breakfasts. It’s the perfect way to spend quality time in a city where the traditions that formed the bedrock of China are carefully and authentically preserved.

Love Suzhou and want more? We can help! We’re a master craftsman of China tour design. Add this Suzhou private tour to any other China tour to expand your travel adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive in Suzhou

On arrival at Suzhou train station, enjoy the welcome from your local guide who will escort you to the hotel for check in. Make the most of it on your first night here by stepping out. Your hotel is centrally located, allowing you to explore the surroundings, including the grand canal and other highlights in the area with ease.

Meals included: None

Day 2 – Suzhou

After breakfast at the hotel start your exploring at Tiger Hill, a large hill park steeped in legend and incredibly beautiful scenery. A particular feature is the leaning Tiger Hill Pagoda set in extensive gardens, trees and lawns scattered with antiquated pavilions and stoneware. Learn from your guide about how the beauty and tranquility of the park belie its history. Afterward continue to Lingering Garden, a large private garden dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1593). The garden is famous for its ingenious layout in four distinct sections and the numerous grotesque stones. Mountains, water and antique buildings form an enchanting landscape exhibiting traditional Chinese garden arts and architecture that invite interest. Later afternoon a rickshaw ride around Pingjiang Road, a well preserved historical block stretching along Pingjiang River, which will take you back in time to its origin during the Tang and Song dynasties. Reflect on the lifestyle of locals as you wander through the small alleys, ancient residences, rivers and bridges of this pocket of history.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: Fancy a little Chinese operatic drama? We can help. Consider booking tickets for the famous Kunqu Opera, first performed in the 1600s, and now preserved as an intangible UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity. For a deep dive into the ‘mother of all Chinese drama’, ask us to arrange tickets for a performance at Zhenqu Garden of Shantang Ancient Street.

Day 3 – Suzhou - Tongli Water Town - Suzhou

Today’s adventure begins with a morning departure when your guide collects you from the hotel lobby. After breakfast today explore Suzhou with your guide who will collect you from the hotel lobby. The first stop is one of the most renowned and spectacular gardens in China, the Humble Administrator’s Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in downtown Suzhou. Allow yourself time to reflect and feel at peace in this classically designed private garden. Wander through the picturesque landscape in which traditional architecture, hills, lawns, flowers and meandering streams harmonize the natural and build environment in poetic elegance. A contrast in style and history, enjoy the artistic features and architectural values of the Suzhou Museum, which houses the new building designed by world famous architect I. M. Pei, responsible for designing the Louvre Pyramid. It’s here that you will also find the historic site of Prince Zhong’s Mansion of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The relics found here are reflective of the ancient collections, in particular of the Ming and Qing Dynasties’ paintings and aircraft. Wander around the garden style museum, enjoying the opportunity to gain a sense of the historic and cultural significance of Su style gardens. Awe-inspiring scenery will have you reaching for your camera. Make your way to Jiangnan water town by visiting Tongli Water Town. Renowned for its well preserved old buildings, private gardens, temples and traditional dwellings, Tongli is a delight. The town’s location, surrounded by five lakes, makes for charming water scenes and a tranquil atmosphere. Feel free to wander the flagstone streets or stop in at a simple teahouse to savor the experience over a cup of Chinese tea. At the end of the day’s activities, you will be returned to the hotel in Suzhou.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: Due to the closure of the Suzhou Museum on Mondays, your guide may make some adjustments of your itinerary if your travel falls on this day.

Day 4 – Depart Suzhou

Start your day at a leisurely pace until check out, at which time you’ll be collected by your guide and driven you to the train station for travel to your next destination.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: Transfer service between Shanghai airport and Suzhou can be arranged in advance on request. Additional fees apply.

Tripadvisor score Fantastic Family Adventure

What an amazing trip in China. China tours did a fantastic job planning out my 12 day trip in China! Dora was very helpful in planning the trip and making adjustments as needed based on what type of experience I was looking for. Not only was she accommodating but she also went out of the way to help me get in contact with the orphanage institution that I was from in China. The main goal of this trip was to visit my home town that I grew up in and to explore China. Dora helped achieve those goals and made a great itinerary. We went to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Lishui, and Hong Kong. Everything went seamless and smooth and the private tour guides were amazing. I would highly recommend using China tours for visiting China!

Tripadvisor score Very good experience

Dec 2025

I went on a family trip in China, going from Hong Kong (arranged by us), to Guilin, Chengdu, Xi'an, and Beijing (arranged by China Tours). The agency provided us with hotels, guides, and transportation, and was available to answer our questions (we used emails and WeChat to communicate, but other options might be available). We generally had a wonderful trip, with very nice attractions, nice guides as well, and a good balance between attractions and personal time. I will recommend China Tours to my acquaintances that want to do a tour in China.

Tripadvisor score Amazing trip to Beijing

Dec 2025 • Couples

We had an amazing time in Beijing and it was our first trip to China. Glad that we chose China tours to organise the trip, thank you Martha!

Our guide, Li, and the driver Sun, were very attentive and helpful and they are insightful! Every day was fantastic, we were taken to the Great Wall at Mutianyu point and took chairlift up. We then took the Toboggan down which was so much fun.

The experience around Forbidden City was also mesmerising. It felt like stepping back in time. We love all the historical stories. Li also took us to the Summer palace where we saw beautiful paintings along the endless corridor and we walked alongside the frozen lake. They were on time but never rushed, so it was relaxing. The hotel, The Regent Beijing was fabulous, the room, the food, location all was perfect. Thank you for organising this trip and we had precious happy memories!

I discovered that everyone in our group also received the same excellent pre-trip customer service. Our guides met us on time in every city and pleasantly accompanied us to our destinations. Hotels were great with awesome breakfast buffets!

My entire experience was a 10/10 - the hotels, schedules, timeliness and even the tour guides - on par, they spoke English and gave a lot of insights into historical events and cultural significance as we went on various tours. I would highly recommend! My entire two weeks was absolutely exciting, little packed but worth it. Definitely using China Tours for my next trip!
