It’s a tough choice, isn’t it? Where in China to visit first? We get it, that’s why we recommend weighing up all your options. To make it easy for you here are our top ten reasons to put Beijing at the top of your list as the first destination in China:
- It’s easily accessible from so many destinations around the world, with direct flights reducing travel times significantly. This is so important if you’re keen on capitalizing on every available minute you have to travel. And who doesn’t want reduced time in transit and more time on the ground?
- In Beijing, you’re connected. Seriously. Whether you’re planning on scaling mountains in Tibet or traversing desert dunes along the Silk Road, Beijing is the perfect launching pad.
- The food is fabulous. Right, so we’re biased, but Beijing is a culinary adventurer’s dream. The food here will surprise and delight, so why not start your China adventure in good taste?
- History on (almost) every corner. It’s easy to think Beijing is all squares and bigger buildings, but it is so much more. Having been made the country’s capital a long way back in 1153, the city is literally paved with history. You will love it! The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall, and well, there’s a veritable treasure trove of wonders to explore. Just one day in Beijing will have you asking for more.
- It’s home of the hutong. Fancy exploring Beijing’s most expensive real estate? Then it’s time to wander the fascinating streets of Beijing’s hutong. Marvel at the way time seems to have stood still in this quarter of Beijing while everything else around it gallops forward at an unrelenting pace.
- It’s close to the Great Wall. Look, it may be a myth that you can see the Great Wall from space, but who wants to do that when you can visit it for real from Beijing? There are a number of ideal spots along the Great Wall which are best accessed from Beijing, so it makes sense for your once-in-a-lifetime adventure should start here.
- Nowhere else makes a better Beijing duck. There’s the duck, and then there’s authentic Beijing duck crafted by a master chef. With the meal’s preparation a performance all on its own, you simply have to try the real thing.
- It’s a treasure trove. Even by China’s standards, the Palace Museum inside the Forbidden City is a remarkable treasure trove of historical items found nowhere else in the world. Complete a Beijing tour with a visit here and you’ll be a Beijing fan for life.
- It’s different from other Chinese cities. It would be easy to think all Chinese cities are the same, but they’re not, with each reflecting their own uniqueness. Beijing is no exception and with its imperial history evident in some of the world’s most remarkable businesses, it’s not hard to see why.
You will love it. For an adventure that makes for beautiful travel memories, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more fitting destination to commence your exploration in China. Talk to us about how we can make it happen.
Answering this question is a tough one because China has so much to offer. While 90 percent of international travelers visit Beijing on a China tour, there are many other places to include on your China bucket list. Xi’an, Piangyao, Luoyang and Zhangjiajie are just a few ‘next stops’ to consider, but if there’s somewhere special on your must-see list, let us help you go there.

Family Adventure with China ToursOur Experience with China Tours was amazing! Our family of 6 (our kids range in age from 8-12) loved the sites, food, hotels, schedule, and hospitality. Possibly the best element of our experience was hanging out with our guides Maggie, Helen, Kevin, and Warren who were so personable, knowledgable, and kind. We would highly recommend China Tours to anyone! - Dan H wrote a review 9 April 2024Houston, TXWonderfully arranged trip through the interior of ChinaOur trip included Yangtze River Cruise with Century Cruises, Zhangjiajie, and Xi'an. Very easy to arrange with Martha from China Tours. Century Cruise line is a high quality line that provides great service (we were impressed how enthusiastic the service personnel were on the ship). They even have a tour group dedicated to English speakers so that all passengers requiring an English speaking guide would be assigned that group. Following our debarkation at Yichang, Martha arranged a private transfer by car from Yichang to Zhangjiajie, which was quite a relaxing drive (we did the private transfer because the train was not yet available then). Both our tour guides Vicky (Zhangjiajie) and Elysha (Xi'an) were very nice and professional. Vicky: although the weather in Zhangjiajie was not great (very foggy), Vicky nevertheless made the trip enjoyable and she was flexible to adjust the trip to avoid crowds as much as possible. Elysha: very knowledgable about Xi’an history and we felt like we attended a class in history with her. Her English is also very good.
