Brief information on Tibet

Located in the southeast of China, Tibet is surely a dreamed destination for travelers from around the world. Covering an area of 1.2 million square kilometers, the land of Tibet is nearly as large as the total territories of France and Germany, which is home to the indigenous Tibetan people and some other ethnic groups in China. Being the highest region on earth, Tibet is known as the "roof of the world”, with an average elevation of 4,900 meters above sea level and more than 50 peaks above 7,000 meters.
The history of Tibet could be dated back to thousands of years, but the written history can only be traced back to the 7th century when Songtsan Gampo, the 33rd Tibetan king, unified the whole area and created a large and powerful empire. During his ruling time, Songtsan Gampo made a lot of reforms and married Princess Wencheng, the niece of the powerful Chinese emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty. From ancient times to the present, the Tibet Autonomous Region has witnessed earth-shaking changes.
Today, with the construction of airport, Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and highway, Tibet is closely linked with other major cities of China. Lhasa, the Capital of Tibet Autonomous Region, is the spiritual and holy land of Tibet, which has numerous scenic spots and historical attractions. Among them, the Potala Palace, Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Gandan Monastery, and Nobulingka are the most famous ones. Shigatse, means “the eastate that fulfill ones wishes”, is the second largest city in Tibet, in which the historical spot Tashilhunpo Monastery attracts many tourists each year. And the Mt. Kailash is holy to both Buddhism and Hinduism. Tibet is naturally a rich and beautiful land, and also one of the most mysterious and purest places in the eyes of many people.
